LIS and LMS Receive "Heart Safe Schools" Designation
Loveland Intermediate School and Loveland Middle School have been named “Heart Safe Schools” through Project ADAM. This designation means the schools are prepared to respond to cardiac emergencies and save lives. Loveland Intermediate School and Loveland Middle School join Loveland High School in being Project ADAM certified.
“Thank you to our amazing health team and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for the work that has gone into expanding our ability to respond to a cardiac event, improving the safety of our students, staff, and community,” Superintendent Mike Broadwater said.
Project ADAM (Automated Defibrillators in Adams Memory) began in 1999 after the death of Adam Lemel, a Wisconsin high school student who collapsed while playing basketball. His family and friends have created a national school cardiac response program to help save lives. Cincinnati Children’s Heart Institute has partnered with Project ADAM as the Greater Cincinnati affiliate.
“Cincinnati Children’s Hospital has been an invaluable resource for our district health team, providing the support and guidance to help us take this important step. We could not have accomplished this without them,” Broadwater said.
The Project ADAM designation requires schools to create cardiac arrest plans, have AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) available and accessible, and have a team of CPR/AED-trained staff who have practiced drills to respond to a cardiac emergency.
Loveland High School became the Cincinnati area’s first Heart Safe School through Project ADAM in 2022. Loveland Intermediate School and Loveland Middle School are the first in Cincinnati to earn the designation. This is an important part of ensuring the safety of our students and community because sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of sudden death in youth athletes.
