Meet David Knapp: Earning My Stripes
Posted Wednesday, August 27, 2014
As one of the newest members of the Tiger Family, I was cognizant of the fact coming in that I would be joining a community of students and educators who have established and proven themselves to be the best of the best when it comes to academics, athletics, the arts, and just about every other aspect of education and citizenship. The bar has been raised very high over the years by the fine people of Loveland City Schools, and I knew that I had my work cut out for me in joining this prestigious group of people and “earning my stripes” as the newly appointed director of technology.
So, how do I plan on earning these stripes?
My job title takes on many different meanings and descriptions based on who you ask (within the context of education particularly). I am, and forever will be, a teacher at my very core, and my ultimate goal here in Loveland is to help teachers and students utilize technology to vastly expand and broaden their horizons regarding what is made possible in (and out of) the classroom. What I’m getting at here is that I plan on earning my stripes in the classroom, through the success and achievement of our students. We’re all in this together, and I hope to play an instrumental part.
After only a few weeks on the job, and having just completed our first full day of school, I have come to a few conclusions that I’d like to share with you (some of which you may already be aware of):
1. The teachers, administrators and staff here at Loveland are some of the most generous and gracious group of educators and people that I’ve ever had the pleasure of coming across.
2. This town is too cool! Until recently, I was a bit of a stranger to this town (although I live just around the way in Sharonville), and I feel like I’ve missed out for never having explored this awesome community. I feel extremely fortunate to get to spend my days here from now on.
3. Loveland City Schools has significant resources. When I say resources, I’m not just referring to textbooks and student devices. Yes, we have those, but we also host an amazing teaching staff, buildings that are beautifully maintained and cared for, and some of the most resourceful folks you could ask for when it comes to running things around here. The Tiger Staff is dedicated to making a profound impact on our students on a daily basis.
Out in the classrooms, I finally got a chance to meet and interact with some of our Loveland Tiger kiddos. The first days of school always hold some much excitement, possibility and wonderment and it’s always so much fun to witness this first hand in the classroom. Working with students at the Loveland Intermediate School, and helping to introduce our new online ‘Digits’ math program and accompanying HP Chromebooks, I had the pleasure of unveiling these new learning tools and got to see the excitement that these types of technology devices evoke in our students. I look forward to seeing the hopeful gains that this new program provides with each of our students, and in helping our students become digitally responsible and fluent individuals.
Although the process of “stripe earning” is not an easy one, nor one that I will take lightly, I welcome this challenge. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - I could not be more thrilled and grateful to now be a part of this fine community and school district.
