Loveland Primary School (LPS) students now have a “Buddy Bench” on the playground, thanks to a donation from Buddy’s Flooring America. The bench was unveiled to students with a special lesson on friendship and a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday, March 17. The “Buddy Bench” was an idea originated by a second-grade Pennsylvania student as a way to combat loneliness at recess. LPS Teacher Tammy Ruehrwein saw the story featured, and worked with staff members to bring the program to LPS.
“I thought the idea was fantastic,” said Kevin Fancher, LPS principal. “This is a perfect opportunity to continue to build the culture of kindness we work to create through our My Voice, My Choice program, and we are so fortunate to have found a corporate friend in Buddy’s Flooring America to sponsor this initiative for our students.”
“The Buddy Bench is working already. I just made 25 new friends in 30 seconds!” said Weisbacher. “How fortunate for the children at LPS to have teachers like Mrs. Ruehrwein and a principal like Mr. Fancher who understand the importance of creating a culture of kindness. I am pleased to be a small part of their years of hard work in this endeavor.”
“I was thrilled to see the students surrounding Mr. Weisbacher on the bench the day of the ribbon cutting ceremony,” said Ruehrwein. “Our whole goal is to foster friendships and end loneliness, and I believe our students really absorbed that lesson.”
