A delicious day in science

The entire sixth grade class plus an ice cream science experiment equaled a recipe for success Friday, Nov. 30, at Loveland Intermediate School (LIS). Mrs. Amy Bentley, Mrs. Margaret Cirone and Mr. Steve Federman cooked up the lesson as a team.
“The sixth grade science teachers plan all of our lessons around inquiry based, hands-on learning experiences,” explained Federman, LIS science teacher. “All students have different learning styles so we try to include some open inquiry activities, some guided labs and some work with articles and books.”
The teachers appeared to score an “A” for the effort; excitement was high during the lab. The students followed a recipe to make ice cream. After they completed the task, they identified all the physical changes, changes in states of matter, and changes in physical properties that occurred during the procedure.
“This was the culminating activity for the matter unit,” said Federman. “It was certainly a fun way for the students to really digest the subject!”
