Mission
The mission of Loveland Primary School, with combined efforts of our district and community, is to provide a safe and caring learning environment that nurtures the academic, social, emotional and physical growth of each child by providing every student an appropriate opportunity to learn and to promote success in life so that students will become life-long learners, responsible citizens, and contributing members in our diverse society.
Curriculum Focus
The Primary School curriculum covers 10 subject areas: reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, handwriting, health, art, music, and physical education. Within these 10 curricular areas we put extra emphasis on reading and language arts. Our reading program is based upon the individual language experiences each child brings to school and involves both phonics and literature-based approaches to reading. Students read a variety of genres during the course of the school year. As a parent, you play a vital part in helping us with the development of your child as a reader and writer. To help your child to be successful in school (and beyond) we encourage all parents to read nightly with their children.
Four
Blocks Framework for Literacy
Instruction
Our school believes that children
who are good readers and writers
will be better, happier students
and citizens. We have made
a commitment to do all that
we
can to ensure that all of our
students will be good readers
and writers. Because our school
recognizes that all children
learn differently, we know
we must find ways to reach
children
no matter what their strengths
and weaknesses might be. Therefore
our teachers structure their
language arts instruction based
upon the Four Blocks model.
The Four Blocks are built upon
the
premise that there are four
basic ways students have always
learned
to read and write. Usually,
a school or a teacher would
focus
on one of those methods in hopes of reaching most of the
students.
The structure of the Four Blocks
model, however, allows us to
reach all students by teaching
all four methods every day.
The Four Blocks method has
proven to be quite effective
for the
schools that implement it,
and our teachers have worked
hard
on their own and during the
TLC (early release) training
times
to learn to use this method.
Each class has four blocks
of time devoted to language during
the day: shared/guided reading,
self-selected reading, writing,
and working with words (phonemic
awareness, spelling patterns,
word recognition, etc.). Our
expectation is that by learning
and practicing each of the
four blocks, we will be able
to harness,
refine and add to our current
best practices, and assure
that the language arts experience
of a student moving from 1st
to 2nd grade is as seamless
as possible. We invite you to
come and visit to see how your
child
is learning and growing.
School Culture
In
addition to our language arts
focus and other areas of
study, Loveland Primary believes
that it is important to create
a school environment that is
welcoming and nurturing. To help
achieve this goal, we actively
participate in the district’s
I C.A.R.E. (I Create A Respectful
Environment) anti-bullying campaign,
with an emphasis on four rules:
