The Best Part of Me
Loveland Primary School (LPS) second-grade students in Patsy Schlesselman and Megan Little’s classes were in the spotlight and on the mic, performing before fellow classmates and parents for Reader’s Theater just before the winter recess. The assignment was a first for this annual event: write about the best part of you.
“The second graders had just finished a larger writing unit on personal narratives,” explained Little. “We had spent a substantial amount of time in class learning about focusing our writing on something small that we have experienced and developing good details around that small moment. The Best Part of Me project was a great culmination to the personal narrative. The students picked one part of themselves that was the most important and had to do the why behind what they chose.”
“Some said hands, some legs, hair, arms… it was fantastic to hear directly from the students what their favorite feature was and why,” said Schlesselman. “We took a picture of their favorite feature and while they were reading their stories, we displayed the photograph using a projector. It was so sweet!”
To add to the ambiance the teachers decorated the classroom to look like a real café, complete with candles, flowers and cloths on the tables, and cookies and beverages for all to enjoy.
“This piece was great practice put into action and the students really surprised us both on how reflective they could be about themselves,” added Little. “We hope that they learned to dig deeper when giving good details in writing and that they learned about themselves too!”
