Loveland Bus Drivers steer into winning positions!
Loveland’s Transportation Department salutes the bus drivers who competed in the Regional BUS ROAD-E-O Saturday, April 22. Loveland had 10 contestants – Darlene Martin, Valerie Daugherty, Kathlene Heath, Rachel Patton, Keith Richter, Lorie Stulz, Bill Toups, Mary Toups, and Len Whitling – participate in the regional competition held at Lakota Plains Jr. High School. The contestants practiced on the weekends and after work.
“The level of participation displays the Transportation Department’s commitment to student safety and improving their knowledge and skills,” said Loveland Transportation Director Greg Osie. “Loveland drivers are the best! The drivers who participated displayed a true personal commitment to Loveland student safety.”
The school bus ROAD-E-O was developed to promote safety, professionalism, and recognition. Every year the state of Ohio along with other states participate. Ohio has eight regions and Loveland participates in the Southwest Region. Contestants take a written exam and a driving skills test. The driving skills test consist of drivers being scored on right hand turns, pickup and drop-off procedures, railroad crossing procedures, offset driving, backwards serpentine, depth perception, and stop line.
Loveland had a team finish in first place – Lorie Stulz, Kathlene Heath, Rachel Patton, Valerie Daugherty – and a team finish in third place – Keith Richter, Len Whitling, Bill Toups, Mary Toups. As individuals, Rachel Patton had a perfect score on her driving skills and qualified for the state competition by finishing in first place. Lorie Stulz also qualified for state with a fifth place finish. This is Stulz's fourth time qualifying for the state competition. She has also qualified for the national competition two other times.
“They did a spectacular job representing the department, district, and the community,” said Osie. “The competition is a wonderful event to gain more knowledge and skills. Not only did the drivers participate, they spent hours studying and practicing their driving skills. Their preparation and dedication is why they were successful!”
