A.   Determine a purpose for reading and establish a range of

      reading comprehension strategies to better understand text.

1.   Establish and adjust purposes for reading including to inform, to understand, to interpret, to enjoy and to solve problems.

1b.  Use syllabication and phonetic decoding to pronounce       unfamiliar words.

3.   Preview reading selections to predict content (title, subtitles,   and pictures).

6.   Select, create, and use graphic organizers to interpret textual       information.

10.  Use criteria to choose independent reading materials (e.g.,       personal interest, knowledge of authors and genres, or       recommendations from others).

10b.Use silent reading time on a regular basis with an expectation       set or responses.

11.  Independently read books for various purposes (e.g., for       enjoyment, for literary experience, to gain information or to       perform a task).

 

B.   Demonstrate effective reading comprehension strategies,       including summarizing, and making predictions and       comparisons using information in text, between text and across       subject areas.

2.   Predict and support predictions with specific references to       textual examples that may be in widely separated sections of text.

3.   Make critical comparisons across texts.

4.   Summarize the information in texts, recognizing that there may       be several important ideas rather than just one main idea and       identifying details that support each. Retell a story using main       ideas and details.

 

C.   Derive meaning through asking and responding to a variety of       questions related to text.

5.   Make inferences based on implicit information in texts, and       provide justifications for those inferences.

7.   Answer literal, factual, inferential and evaluative (opinion)       questions to demonstrate comprehension of grade-appropriate       print texts, electronic and visual media.

9.   List questions and search for answers within the text to construct       meaning.

 

D.   Apply self-monitoring strategies to clarify confusion about text       and to monitor comprehension.

8.   Monitor own comprehension by adjusting speed to fit the       purpose, or by skimming, scanning, reading on, looking back,       and note taking or summarizing what has been read so far in   text.
