Student of the Day: Create Sound/Letter Understanding with Names

Students can learn to identify letters and words by exploring one another's names and other words. Each student gets to be "Student of the Day," and the class will explore his or her name and life. Students will be encouraged to draw and write messages to each other on a daily basis.

Digby's First Sounds game

In this game a cute mole named Digby gives the child a sound and the child needs to pick the word that begins with that sound. Three levels go from consonants to blends.

The ABC Game

In this game the student picks the picture that begins with the letter shown.

Alphabet Action

In this cute online activity the student picks any letter from the alphabet and then hears the letter name said and sees an animation of a word that starts with that letter.

Paw Park Sassy Seals

In this cute online game the student is given a word and then needs to identify which fish says a word that starts with the same beginning sound. There are ten rounds and great animation.

Word Recognition Strategies Using Nursery Rhymes

This is a must use site! Here you will find interactive online lessons and games to teach children to read. In addition you can print out reading and writing pages that correspond to the online activities.
Level I (Learn to Read) is designed for K-1 emergent readers who have a basic understanding of letter sound relationships. It will help you teach the strategies needed to hear and decode short and long-vowel sounds, and provide opportunities to practice digraphs, blends, word families and creative writing.
Level II (It's Fun to Read) is intended to meet the needs of students at many different reading and writing levels. It will help all children learn to write creatively.

1) Poem Pack: Ten colourful, animated poems with voice over and activities. Each poem deals with a different long vowel sound. Excellent!

Advanced Phonemes resources

The activities on this site deal with more advanced phonemes (OW, OY, AR, DEEP U, AIR, OR, AW, IR and EAR)
1) Sandcastle Game: Build a sandcastle and get to know the common spelling patterns for vowel phonemes.
2) Write a Postcard game: Help Salty Sam write a postcard and get used to using words containing alternative spelling patterns for vowel phonemes in sentences.
3) Magic Pencil: Watch how Magic Pencil writes some words containing vowel phonemes. Then have a go yourself.
4) Print and Do: Worksheets for the phonemes.

In this game students pick which two words rhyme out of several possible pairs.

The Whirlyword Machine

The Whirlyword Machine is a 'fruit machine' that makes 3 letter C-V-C words. Choose Level 1 to create rhyming words. Spin the first reel to make new words that use the same word ending. Decide if each new word is a real word or not. If you are correct, the word is collected and added to one of your lists.
