A.   Utilize letter-sound correspondence knowledge and structural       analysis to decode words.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1.   Identify and distinguish between letters, words, and sentences.

2a.  Identify and say the beginning and ending sounds in words.

2b.  Reads in longer phrases most of the time at a fluency rate of 40-      60 wpm.

3.   Demonstrate an understanding of letter-sound correspondence       by saying the sounds from all letters and from a variety of letter       patterns, and by matching sounds to the corresponding letters       (initial, final consonant is short), CVVC or CVCV patterns (2       vowels long and lazy).

4.   Decode by using letter sound matches (y as a vowel; vowel       combinations – oa, ai, ea, ay; two letter blends; identify       digraphs sh, th, ch, wh, kn; recognize bossy r – ir, er, ur, ar, or;       recognize ow; recognize sounds of hard and soft /g/ and /c/.

5.   Use knowledge of common word families (e.g., it or at) to       sound out unfamiliar words. Attach phonics in book.

6a.  Blend two to four phonemes (sounds) into words.

6b.  Name a word that begins with a particular blend.

7.   Add, delete or change sounds in a given word to create rhyming       words (e.g., short vowel word families).

B.   Demonstrate fluent oral reading using sight words and decoding       skills, varying intonation and timing as appropriate for text.

8.   Demonstrate a growing stock of word wall sight words. (See    first grade word wall words).

9.   Read text using fluid and automatic decoding skills, including       knowledge of word patters, onsets and rhymes.

10.  Read aloud with changes in emphasis, voice, timing and       expression that show a recognition of punctuation and an       understanding of meaning.

11.  Alphabetize to the first letter.
