A.  Verify meanings of words by the author’s use of definition,       restatement, examples, comparison, contrast and cause and       effect by using selections of literature of various genres and       historical time periods.

1.   Recognize and identify how authors clarify meanings of words       through context and use definition, restatement, example,       comparison, contrast and cause and effect to advance word       study.

 

B.  Distinguish the relationship of word meanings between pairs of       words encountered in analogical statements through exercises       contained in vocabulary workbook.

2.   Analyze the relationships of pairs of words in analogical       statements (e.g., synonyms and antonyms, connotation and       denotation) and evaluate the effectiveness of analogous       relationships.

 

C.  Explain the influence of the English language on world       literature, communications and popular culture.

 

 

3a.  Examine and explain the development of the  English language       and its influence on world literature, communications and       popular cultures.

3b. Recognize the influence of Greek, Roman, Celtic, Anglo-Saxon       and Norse cultures on the development of the English       Language.

3c.  Understand the development of the English language from its       earliest form of Old English to present day by studying the       historical events leading to the early development of England as       a nation.

 

 

D.  Apply knowledge of roots, affixes and phrases to aid       understanding of content area vocabulary.

4a.  Use knowledge of Greek, Latin and Anglo-Saxon roots,       prefixes and suffixes to understand complex words and new       subject-area vocabulary (e.g., unknown words in science,       mathematics and social studies).

4b.  Learn a list of roots, prefixes, and suffixes and their meanings.

  

E.   Use multiple resources to enhance comprehension of       vocabulary.

5.   Determine the meanings and pronunciations of unknown words       by using dictionaries, thesauruses, glossaries, technology and       textual features such as definitional footnotes or sidebars.
