A.  Compose reflective writings by using specific personal       experiences to draw conclusions about life.

 

 

1a.  Write reflective compositions that:

·         Use personal experiences as a basis for reflection on some aspects of life

·         Draw abstract comparisons between specific incidents and abstract concepts

·         Maintain a balance between describing incidents and relating them to more general, abstract ideas that illustrate personal beliefs

·         Move from specific examples to generalizations about life

1b. Write a narrative based upon the Science Fiction what if?       Premise.

1c.  Write a tale incorporating themes and conventions of fairy       tales.

 

B.  Write responses to literature that provide an interpretation,       recognize ambiguities, nuances and complexities and that       understand the author’s use of stylistic devices and effects       created.

 

 

2a.  Write responses to literature that:

·         Advance a judgment that is interpretive, analytical, evaluative or reflective

·         Support key ideas and viewpoints with accurate and detailed references to the text or to other works and authors

·         Analyze the author’s use of stylistic devices and express an appreciation of the effects the devices create

·         Identify and assess the impact of possible ambiguities, nuances and complexities within the text

·         Anticipate and answer a reader’s questions, counterclaims or divergent interpretations

·         Provide a sense of closure to the writing

2b. Compare and contrast works of literature with

      similar Science Fiction/Fantasy themes.

 

C.  Produce functional documents (e.g., letters,   formal       correspondence, news articles) that report, organize and convey       information and ideas accurately, foresee readers’ problems or       misunderstandings and that include formatting techniques that       are user friendly.

3.   Write functional documents (e.g., requests for information,       resumes, letters of complaint, memos and proposals) that:

·         Report, organize and convey information accurately

·         Use formatting techniques that make a document user-friendly

·         Anticipate readers’ problems, mistakes, and misunderstandings

 

D.  Use documented textual evidence to justify interpretations of       literature or to support a research topic.

4.   Write informational essays or reports including research that:

·         Pose relevant and tightly drawn questions that engage the reader

·         Provide a clear and accurate perspective on the subject

·         Create an organizing structure appropriate to the purpose, audience and context

·         Support the main ideas with facts, details, examples and explanations from sources

·         Document sources and include bibliographies

 

E.   Write a persuasive piece that states a clear position, includes       relevant information and offers compelling evidence in the form       of facts and details.

 

 

5a.  Write persuasive compositions that:

·         Establish and develop a controlling idea

·         Support arguments with detailed evidence

·         Exclude irrelevant information

·         Cite sources of information

5b. Examine the moral implications of emerging technologies in       society.

5c.  Develop a position paper outlining point of view on a moral       dilemma.

6.   Produce informal writings (e.g., journals, notes and poems) for       various purposes.
